Classes for Ages 8-12
Session 4: February 2 - March 22, 2026
In our first design class, we will explore different principles of design while working on a variety of projects. We will design a pattern for a tea set, a miniature lounge chair, and wrapping paper for our next birthday gift. Our final project will be designing the decoration for a cotton toe bag, choosing from the different principles and techniques we learned during the class.
All artists may choose one of their artworks to be included in our next exhibition and will be invited to our exhibition opening party!
This class will be offered on Wednesdays and Sundays. As classes will work and progress in different speeds, groups will be closed. This means class days can NOT be changed during the class period. Missed class time can be made up during Open Studio on Saturdays.
Class time: Wednesday 5:00-6:15pm OR Sunday 11:00am-12:15pm

Age 8-12: Young Designers

German Immersion Class: Ocean Creatures (5-12 years)
This class will be taught in German (mostly or in parts, depending on the understanding of participants) and is open to children age 5-12 (no preschoolers). Due to repeated requests, this class will be the third segment of our popular Ocean Creature class.
Every artist will choose an ocean creature and turn it into a paper mache sculpture. We will create a background using abstract painting and printing techniques to showcase our sculpture in its ocean environment. At the end of the class, all students will be able to name and describe their ocean creature in German.
All artists may choose their artwork to be included in our next exhibition and will be invited to attend our exhibition opening party!
Class time: Saturday 2:00-3:15pm
Age requirement: children must be at least 6 years old OR currently enrolled in Kindergarten (This class is NOT suitable for preschool students. Students who are slightly older than 12 may join if they do not mind working with younger classmates.)

Session 3: December 8, 2025 - February 1, 2026
While all our classes incorporate elements of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) because we know that art is as much part of our daily lives as math and science are, this is our first class fully dedicated to the concept. We will explore the world of visual illusions, starting with two different techniques that combine two pictures into one (agamographs and thaumatropes). Next, we will look at and create illusion drawings and impossible shapes. The goal of the class will be to create a painting that uses a visual illusion.
This class will combine areas of math (geometry), physics (optics), and engineering (technical drawing) into a truly interdisciplinary creative process. Needless to say, none of it will feel like school and we will let our imagination lead the way. We can think of no better way to develop real-life career skills, can you?
All artists get to choose one of their artworks to be included in our next exhibition and will be invited to our exhibition opening party!
Class time: Wednesday 5:00-6:15pm

STEAM adventures: The world of visual illusions
Please sign our waiver prior to your child’s first class at Blue Mouse Gallery. You can bring a printed copy to class, email us a signed PDF, or fill out the form when you arrive at our studio (please allow for extra time). We cannot permit class participation without a signed waiver.
We usually think of letters and words as part of literature, but what about turning them into visual art? Letters are wonderful creatures that can take different shapes (think of all the different typefaces developed by designers). They can change their meaning and even their sounds depending on the words and languages we place them in. We will turn letters and our favorite words into drawings, sculptures, and paintings that have more to say than meets the eye.
Similar to the STEAM class above, our creativity will use a truly interdisciplinary approach. We will include math and science for perspective drawings, but also language arts and culture studies. We will celebrate art as a truly all-encompassing force of life and a source of amazement, camaraderie, and joy!
All artists get to choose one of their artworks to be included in our next exhibition and will be invited to our exhibition opening party!

German immersion collage making class!
Create amazing collages while practicing German
This class will be taught in German and is open to children age 5-12. We will explore intuitive collage techniques that can be learned by observing and imitating. All levels of German learners are welcome to make art together.
We will assemble cut-out body parts (after naming them in German) to create a monster collage, weave two magazine photos into one to create a new layer of meaning, and create a black-and-white collage to complete it with colorful acrylic markers. While some focus will be on language use and building vocabulary, children will work on their creative skills and use their imagination. Once language becomes secondary, it is easy to overcome perfectionism and let go of the fear of making mistakes while speaking.
All artists get to choose one of their artworks to be included in our next exhibition and will be invited to attend our exhibition opening party!
